UNHCR facilitates visit of UN Under Secretary General to the Eastern Ukraine

On 23 August, UN Under Secretary General and International Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos visited Kharkiv and Donetsk region to assess the situation in the region with regard to internal displacement and scope of the damage in the areas affected by the conflict.

As part of her visit, Ms. Amos traveled from Khakiv to Slovyansk in the north of Donetsk region. "The city is rapidly returning to life", said Donetsk Deputy Governor, who chaired the meeting with local authorities. 


"I am glad to see how city changed since July", said Ms Amos during her briefing to the press.

On Friday UNHCR shipped to the city 300 NFI sets to most vulne rable returnee families in Sloviansk. It is stored in the basement of  Slovyansk local library, which is also used as distribution center

Ms Amos also visited on the schools which is being renovated from massive destruction before the beginning of the school year

Another 10 tons of NFI and supplementary food from UNHCR arrived to the Solnechniy Bereg sanatorium in Krasniy Lyman, hosting numerous families from Luhansk, Gorlivka and Donetsk
