UNHCR helped to celebrate Nowruz for displaced communities in Kyiv

KYIV, Ukraine, 24 March 2017 (UNHCR). UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Ukraine supported the celebration of Nowruz holiday, organized by the partners, Crimea-SOS NGO and Rokada Charity Fund. The event was hosted at the Taurida National Vernadsky University, which generously opened its doors for the spring festival to the communities of refugees and internally displaced people in Ukraine.

UNHCR and partners to improve conditions at the crossing points in eastern Ukraine

 

NOVOTROITSKE, Ukraine, 7 March (UNHCR). Novotroitske became the first out of three crossing points in Donetsk region to receive technical assistance from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and partners. The transferred equipment will help to decrease the waiting time and alleviate suffering of tens of thousands of civilians crossing daily the dividing line in conflict-torn eastern Ukraine.

UNHCR sends aid for 2500 residents of Avdiivka

KYIV, Ukraine, 03 February 2017 (UNHCR). On Thursday, 2 February, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, delivered 40 metric tons of humanitarian assistance to the town of Avdiivka. In addition to a highly demanded tarpaulin for emergency repairs, the humanitarian cargo contained supplies for 2,000 persons, including 2,000 blankets, 500 bedding and towel sets, jerry cans, buckets and winter clothing.

UNHCR supports human right based approach in Ukraine’s position towards non-government controlled territories


KYIV, Ukraine, 10 February 2017 (UNHCR). UNHCR together with partners encourages Parliament to ensure international human rights standards while developing comprehensive solutions for territories outside of governmental control. On 8 February, UNHCR participated in a session of the Parliamentary Committee on State Building and Regional Policy to contribute to a discussion of draft law 3593-d On Temporarily Occupied Territory of Ukraine.

UNHCR assistance to conflict-affected population in Avdiivka [UPDATED]

UNHCR is closely following the situation in Avdiivka. Increased fighting in the recent days has led to more destruction and suffering for local residents. We are concerned about thousands of people trapped under fire without electricity, water and heating with temperatures reaching -18C. Our partners are already on the ground assessing damage to houses and acute needs of population. UNHCR Ukraine has sent trucks to Avdiivka with emergency shelter materials to cover broken roofs and windows and other basic relief items.
