Meeting with the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations
On 7 February 2013, the UNHCR Regional Representative for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine Oldrich Andrysek had an official meeting with representatives of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations.
During the meeting Oldrich Andrysek emphasized that UNHCR Regional Representation seeks a closer cooperation with the Parliamentary Committee in particular on the harmonization of Ukrainian legislation on asylum with international and European standards.
During the meeting UNHCR representatives outlined key legal documents which are important in terms of harmonization. Among them are : (1) Law of Ukraine "On refugees and persons in need of additional or temporary protection" (from July 8, 2011), (2) the national legislation related to the Law (ensuring rights of the applicants seeking international protection in Ukraine), (3) standards of biometric documents for people who need complementary protection and stateless persons, (4) development of the law on statelessness determination procedure in Ukraine (5) regulation of the legal status and rights of formerly deported Crimean Tatars.
MP Valery Patskan, Committee Chairman, assured the UNHCR Regional Representative that issues related to migration, refugees, asylum in Ukraine belong to the main policy priorities of the Committee. He mentioned that cooperation between the committee and UNHCR will contribute to improvement of the Ukrainian legislation and further approximation to international standards, in accordance with Ukraine's commitments under the 1951 Refugee Convention and the EU-Ukraine Visa Liberalization Action Plan.
During the meeting, the Committee expressed its willingness to cooperate with UNHCR in Ukraine, exchange experiences in the field of migration and the protection of refugees, as well as participate in projects relating to the activities of the Committee.
From the UNHCR side the meeting was attended by Regional Representative Oldrich Andrysek and UNHCR Legal Adviser Dmitry Plechko.
